Walking Safari in Ngorongoro Creater Highlands & Oldonyo Lengai

The peaks and crater of seven extinct volcanoes in Ngorongoro creater an inspiring and challenging landscape for hikers. Another active Volcano- Oldonyo Lengai the (Mountain of God as by known by the Maasai) stand just outside the border.

    Day 1: 8:00 am transfer from Mto wa Mbu from Moshi/Arusha

    The walk will start at market where you will meet a chagga family producing banana beer. Then the part take a walk northwards, passing through many different farms. On your way as you walk along you will get in depth information about various fruit and vegetable grown in the area. Mr. Philipo and a farmer from Kigoma will show you his oil press machine and tell you about his development organization called ACT. Furthermore you will be able to visit the sunflower seed production farm where you will have an opportunity of taking marvelous picture of colorful sunflower field with the Great Rift Valley as a background.

    The Papyrus Lake Tour

    This walk starts 5km north Mto WA Mbu where the Miwaleni waterfall pouring down from the rift Valley wall have created a green oasis. Passing across some little streams, you will walk in the direction of the Papyrus Lake, from where the Rangi people collect plant materials for making mats and Baskets. From the Papyrus Lake your walk through the rice farms leads us to Sandawe families a Traditional society who still make and use traditional bows and arrows for hunting. The walk can be extended with a climb over the water falls on the Rift Valley walls.

    Day 2: Balaa Hill tour

    Starting from Mto WA Mbu, you walk northward along the foot of rift valley wall. The peasant in this area usually grow banana of different variety from which leave provide pleasant shade. As you walk away from the Mto wa Mbu Township Centre passing through various farms peasant will give you some explanation about the irrigation methods used in the area. Then eventually you start climbing the Balaa Hills (ie the hills of misfortune) and in about 20minute you will enjoy the beautifully view over the green oasis of Mto wa Mbu village.

    While at the top of the hill got the guide will explain to you how the hill got its mysterious name. The walk can be extended with a visit to Njoro spring, one of the main water source for the area and to nearby waterfall.

    Day 3: at 8:00 am drive to Ngorongoro with picnic Lunch

    After a short game drive in the crater, proceed to Nainokanoka, where the part will spend night, ready for walking safari next day. Arrangement for donkey, a Maasai guide and a ranger are done here.

    Day 4: Depart from Nainokanoka Campsite for Elbouruburu at 7:00 am          with picnic lunch

    The walk takes 6hrs you will be accompanied by ranger, some donkeys a Maasai Guide and cooks, heading towards Lake Natron and Oldonyo Lengai Mountain (active Volcano)

    Dinner and overnight at Elboruboru campsite. 

    Day 5: After breakfast leave Elboruboru depression for Empakai (a 6hrs walks)

    Picnic lunch en route.

    Dinner and overnight at Empakai campsite.

    Day 6:  After breakfast start a descend into Empakai crater

    The tour takes about 4 – 6 hours including a return walk to Empakai campsite (picnic lunch in the crater).

    Day 7: After breakfast leave Empakai campsite for Acacia tree campsite

    5 hrs walking, with picnic lunch en route.  Dinner and overnight at Acacia tree campsite.

    Day 8: After early breakfast leave Acacia tree campsite for Lake Natron’s Kamakia camp site

    Picnic lunch en route.  Dinner and overnight at Kamakia Campsite.

    Day 9:  After breakfast walk and visit water falls (possibly with picnic lunch)

    Afternoon return to Kamakia campsite. Dinner and overnight at Kamakia campsite.

    Day 10: After breakfast drive to Longido at the SNV project on Maasai life

    Picnic lunch en route.

    Dinner and overnight at SNV project campsite. 

    Day 11: After breakfast, a walk to the refuge of birds such as weavers,

    Sunbirds, barbets and turaces.

    Dinner and overnight at Longido campsite.

    Day 12:  After breakfast, start a walking safari

    From OL Tepesi to Kiokouwa, along a narrow Maasai cattle trail that winds over the slopes of Longido Mountain.  In 2 hours time you gradually start climbing Mt. Longido from the plains. On clear day you have a beautiful views of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru.

    Day 13: After breakfast drive to Arusha for shopping

    Lunch in Arusha, after shopping.

    Then drive to the Airport or Transfer to the border.
