Bagamoyo is a small town, but rich, rich in culture and history. Located 75 km north of Dar es Salaam the town is the former capital of Tanganyika , Bagamoyo is said to mean “Here I lay down my heart” a cry of desperation of slaves, as it was the last stop before being transported to the slave market in the spice island of Zanzibar. The town boasts of the beginning of the Catholic Church in East Africa. Early Arabs traders and other explorers like Burton, Speke, and Stanleyand Livingstone and other missionaries all used the port of Bagamoyo. About 5 km to the south, at Kaole, are ruins of coral mosque as well as graves and houses dating back to the 13th century.
